The Bachelor of Sciences in Chemistry degree program at the University of Houston-Downtown provides students with the knowledge needed to pursue graduate studies in chemistry and related fields. The program is divided into three principal areas. The first area contains a group of courses in the liberal arts that provide the student with a broad-based general education. The second area contains courses that provide a strong foundation in basic science, including courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics. The third area emphasizes the advanced methods, theories, and applications that are important to the world of chemistry.
Some of the courses also included in this area are organic chemistry, physical chemistry, quantitative analysis, and biochemistry. The courses specified for this degree are approved by the American Chemical Society. Students are required to participate in an appropriate field experience or research activity as part of their curriculum to satisfy graduation requirements for this degree.
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
Graduates who earn a BS in Chemistry will be able to:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the discipline (Basic Knowledge).
- Demonstrate laboratory skills common to modern laboratories (Laboratory Skills).
- Effectively communicate scientific information in writing and in oral presentations (Communication Skills).
- Demonstrate the use of scientific reasoning to analyze and interpret data and implement project-based activities (Scientific Reasoning and Research).

- Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical standards for the responsible conduct of scientific research and its applications (Ethics).

ADMISSIONS AND DECLARATION OF MAJOR
Students may be admitted to and declare a major in Chemistry if they meet the following criteria:
- Continuing students at UHD must have
- Students transferring to UHD must have
- Freshmen who meet the Freshman Admissions criteria to UHD and the following criteria will be declared upon admission

The chemistry degree program will prepare students for rewarding careers through smaller classes, faculty mentoring, modern labs, hands-on experience, and flexible class options. Graduates in the Houston area majoring in chemistry will find Houston and the Gulf Coast region a fine prospect for employment as Houston is widely recognized as the energy/chemical capital of the world.
