Do I need to have any land management experience or take any prerequisites before starting the PLM program?

You are not required to have any land management experience or take any prerequisites before starting the PLM program. The program covers a broad range of topics which will equip you with the necessary knowledge to be successful in this field.


Is it necessary to take the Petroleum Land Management Fundamentals first before taking the other five courses?

You do not have to complete the six courses in any order. If you pass the course exam, you move forward to the next class.


Can I substitute my education and experience for any of the courses?

Unfortunately, we do not offer waivers to classes based upon education or experience. You must successfully complete all six courses, no exceptions.


Will I need to purchase class material for any courses?

All class materials are provided to the student for the course.


How will I get books and course information?

For face-to-face courses, you will recieve a verification e-mail from plm@uhd.edu by the Tuesday prior to the first day of class regarding class information and policies. All course materials, including the textbook, will be given to you on the first day of class. If you have not received your e-mail by Wednesday, please contact the PLM Department at 713-221-5015.

For online courses, you will receive a verification e-mail from plm@uhd.edu with your mailing address. This address is where the textbook will be shipped to you. Please verify this information is correct. You will also receive an e-mail with your login information for Blackboard Learn. If you have not received an e-mail by the first Monday of the month, please call our office at 713-221-5015. The textbook is also available on Blackboard Learn, in case you do not receive it by the first day of class.


How large are the face-to-face courses and is there any diversity?

Class size typically ranges from 50-55 students. All students are professionals either starting or already working in the land management field. There are typically no UHD undergraduate or graduate students in the class.


Do you offer online professional land management classes?

We offer all six professional land management classes online. Please click on the Online Classes tab on the left for more information.


Do the online courses require that I log in at a certain time?

The online courses do not require you to log in at a specific time or day. You may complete your lesson at any time that is convenient for you, as long as you keep pace with your course's weekly schedule and meet your instructor's due dates.


What is the nature of the online course?

The online program is designed to keep you involved through discussion boards, on-demand and interactive content, short videos, and weekly assignments. One of six classes is offered each month and each class is divided into four week segments. You must progress through these items based on the course's weekly schedule and instructor's due dates.


Am I allowed to take some courses online and others face-to-face?

You may mix-n-match online and face-to-face courses to complete your certificate. However, if you register for an online course, you must complete it online and likewise with face-to-face courses.


Can I get Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for this certificate program?

Unfortunately, FAFSA is not available towards the PLM Certificate. The PLM Certificate Program is a part of a continuing education program, and financial aid is only offered for academic courses.


Can I take a course in a different mode of delivery once I have paid?

If you have already paid and wish to change the delivery of the course, please contact the ABTC office at 713-221-8032 prior to the class starting. See the withdrawal and refund policy. Keep in mind that courses are not simultaneously offered face-to-face and online. In addition, online courses and face-to-face courses are priced differently.


Can I switch to a different mode of delivery once a course has started?

You must complete the course in the mode of delivery for which you registered. However, you may register for your next course in the mode of delivery of your choice.


If I miss a face-to-face session, can I make-up the material I missed online?

Unfortunately, you cannot make-up the missed material online. If you miss more than 8 hours of face-to-face classes, you will be administratively withdrawn from the class.


What happens if I fail a course?

You will have to re-register and pay the full amount to complete the course successfully. In order to receive a PLM Certificate, you must pass all courses.


Will I be guaranteed a job in the PLM field upon completing the program?

Unfortunately, we cannot act as a placement agency but the university does have free resources available for resume writing, cover letter writing, and interviewing skills. However, many companies are increasingly seeing the value of the program, and many students have reported improvements in their careers as a direct result of completing the program.


Are there any resources available to assist me in career placement?

Please visit UHD Career Search. There are workshops available though out the week and some Fridays. The website has resume and cover letter handouts that you might find helpful. Some services, such as individual appointments with career counselors are not available at this time.


Is this certificate program approved by American Association of Professional Landmen (APPL) or Houston Association of Professional Landmen (HAPL) for continuing education credits?

You may receive continuing education credits for approved courses by applying to the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL).


Will this program provide me with a Certified Professional Landman (CPL) certification?

The University of Houston-Downtown awards a PLM Certificate, which indicates that you have successfully completed and mastered the content of all courses. The PLM Certificate is neither a CPL certification nor a degree.


How do I obtain a receipt to submit to my employer for reimbursement?

After the class, we will provide a letter in the form of a .pdf for your employer, stating whether you passed the class. Please contact the PLM Department at plm@uhd.edu to request a course completion letter. You may also call us at 713-221-5015.


Does the Professional Land Management Certificate award any academic credits from UHD?

The Professional Land Management Certificate is not a degree seeking program. It is offered by the Continuing and Professional Education division of the UHD College of Business. It has been specifically designed to address the growing demand for well trained and skilled land management specialists. Upon completion of all required courses, students will receive the UHD Professional Land Management Certificate. The successful completion of this program does not award credit for UHD undergraduate or graduate degrees.


Are students following noncredit continuing education programs registered as UHD students?

No, students following UHD continuing education programs are not registered UHD students. They are following noncredit programs and certificates offered by UHD’s continuing education division.
