The expansion of gas and oil exploration and development in the United States has increased the demand for land management.
The University of Houston-Downtown College of Business offers a noncredit Professional Land Management Certificate Program specifically designed to address the growing demand for well trained and skilled land management specialists.
The UHD program was created in partnership with Petroleum Education Workshops, the premier educational and training center for oil and gas personnel. Courses are taught by UHD faculty members and industry experts.
The program offers an exciting opportunity to bridge the education gap for professionals who want university-quality instruction in a condensed format and without the pressure of college exams.
Students are required to complete six courses to obtain the UHD PLM Certificate:

Courses can be taken in any order, and students can receive 12 continuing education credits for each course through the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL), National Association of Lease and Title Analysts (NALTA), and National Association of Division Order Analysts (NADOA).
Options to Suit Different Schedules
These courses are offered both online and face-to-face (in the classroom). Students can choose either type, or combine both delivery methods to suit their preferences, work schedule or other considerations.
Since 2011, UHD has awarded the PLM Certificate to more than 900 professionals. Its competency-based curriculum has effectively improved the career opportunities of a diverse group of professionals involved in petroleum land management:
"I completed the Landman course a year ago. I wanted to let you know that I am happily working for ExxonMobil now as a direct result of the course. The knowledge I learned from the course was indispensable for me in discussing the range of energy topics from hydraulic fracturing to farm-in/farm-out agreements. Thank you for everything you taught during this course."
"I have worked in advertising for the past 12 years. I signed up for your class as a first step to restart my career. Last week I was offered a position doing contract work as a land administrator for a major company that has plenty of room for growth and development. I am so excited about this opportunity, and I feel the tools and confidence you provided me in class is what helped me get my foot in the door. I know the knowledge I gained will help carry me throughout my oil and gas career."
"It has been a tremendous program and I'll certainly recommend it to colleagues and those interested in the industry."
"I am so thankful I found out about your on-line program. I had 15 years experience in the legal field and knew nothing about the oil and gas industry. I have learned so much through this program. Mid-way through the courses, my employer noticed my increased understanding of the industry."
"I also wanted to say thanks for the program itself. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and truly feel that my overall knowledge base increased exponentially with every course I took. I have been a field landman for over 7 years, but these courses gave me a great deal of insight and understanding about what happens outside my world (the courthouse). In addition to being a better landman than when I started your courses, I have every confidence that these course will be a great asset in my continued career."
"I have found everything to be very beneficial. Coming into the industry just over a year ago with no experience what so ever and very little knowledge in oil and gas. The last 6 months have help me tremendously in my career and though I feel I have learned a lot, there is so much more to learn about property ownership. Because of your courses, I'm confident I have a solid base to build my education off of. I think you're running a great program!"
"I've been doing this for a number of years and it is great to see a program pull the many aspects of land management together. Many of the programs out there do this through one day seminars, etc. that cost $500+ and they review a basic understanding crammed in a day or two. This seems to be a pretty thorough program...I love what I do so it is great to be enriching the career path."
"I received the job offer on Thursday, and they want me to start in two weeks. I just want to say thank you for helping me along the way. I really have learned so much valuable information that I wouldn't have had I no taken your course. Also, I really appreciate having a teacher so open to questions from students. Thanks again for everything. "
"This course has given me so much information, its amazing. I will keep these books forever. Thank you for reassuring me, this certification is the most important thing I've ever done in my life. It really means the world to me. Thanks again for everything. I would definitely be lost without your guidance and support."
"The Professional Land Management Certificate program at University of Houston-Downtown not only looks good on my resume, it taught me the things I needed to know to get started in my new career in the oil and gas business. The knowledge I gained in this program is something I actually use on the job and in the real world everyday. Thanks UHD! ...and Terrill Williams and Petroleum Education Workshops."
"I wanted to let you know that I recently started a job with Tallgrass Energy in the land department. I've only been with them for a short time but the skills and lessons taught through the various classes have already paid dividends. Thanks again for leading me to this new venture."
"Whereas, others had offered training for just landmen and attorneys, our courses reach all facets of petroleum land management including division order analysts, lease administrators and land techs. This is one of the reasons for the program's success. Currently, several Houston based oil and gas companies send all of their land and land administration personnel through the PLM Certificate program."
