Professional Land Management Certificate Program title

Competency-Based Learning Solutions for Business and Industry

PLM Home

The recent expansion of gas and oil exploration and development in the United States has increased the demand for land management professionals across the nation. The University of Houston-Downtown offers a noncredit Professional Land Management Certificate (PLM Certificate) specifically designed to address the growing demand for well trained and skilled land management specialists.

The program was created in partnership with Petroleum Education Workshops, the premier educational and training center for oil and gas personnel. Courses are offered by UHD faculty members and industry experts. The program bridges the education gap for those persons wanting exposure to University quality instruction on a condensed basis without the pressure of exams.

Proven Results

Since 2011, UHD has awarded the PLM Certificate to over 800 professionals. Its competency-based curriculum has effectively improved the career opportunities of a diverse group of professionals involved in the land management field:

    • Landmen
    • Lease administrators
    • Division order analysts
    • Field brokers
    • Lease and title analysts
    • Attorneys and other professionals interested in understanding the land management field

Flexible Curriculum

Students are required to complete six courses to obtain the UHD PLM Certificate. These courses are offered both online and face-to-face. Students can attend all courses online or face-to-face or combine both delivery methods to suit their preferences, work schedule, or other personal circumstances.

Courses can be taken in any order, and students can receive 12 continuing education credits for each course through the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL), National Association of Lease and Title Analysts (NALTA), and National Association of Division Order Analysts (NADOA).

The Distinctiveness of the UHD PLM Certificate

Terrill Williams

"Whereas, others had offered training for just landmen and attorneys, our courses reach all facets of petroleum land management including division order analysts, lease administrators and land techs. This is one of the reasons for the program's success. Currently, several Houston based oil and gas companies send all of their land and land administration personnel through the PLM Certificate program."
–Terrill Williams, PEW President and PLM Instructor
