CHSS Winter Trip

December 29, 2012-January 9, 2013

This itinerary provides information about the range of sites you will have the opportunity to explore. Six days are set aside for you to explore in Taipei and Tainan on your own or in groups. Breakfast at the hotel will be available every day, and we have planned three group dinners that consist of 7-course meals, plus soup and rice. In the evenings, you may want to visit a night market or even a night club. Both stay open until the early morning hours!


We will depart from Houston on December 29, 2012 at 7:30 AM and fly to Detroit and then to Tokyo, Japan and then to Taipei, Taiwan. We will arrive in Taipei on the evening of December 30, 2012 and check into the hotel at 10:50 PM.


Taipei
Taipei is the capital of Taiwan and the largest city. Taipei is also one of Houston’s sister cities. Our hotel is located in city center, a short walk to both the Linjiang Street Night Market and Taipei 101. In fact, many of the locations listed here are within walking distance to the hotel.


  • National Palace Museum
  • Sheng Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines
  • Chang Kai-shek Memorial Hall
  • Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
  • Taipei 101 - watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks display
  • Shilin Night Market
  • Jianguo Holiday Flower and Jade Markets

Tainan
January 3-6: We will take the high-speed rail to Tainan, the ancient capital of Taiwan, where we will stay for three days before returning again to Taipei. In Tainan, you will have an opportunity to explore:

  • Sakam Tower, built by the Dutch in 1653
  • National Museum of Taiwan Literature
  • Anping Old Fort
  • Confucius Temple
  • Lady Linshui Temple
  • National University of Tainan, meet with university students

After three days in Tainan, we will return to Taipei. We will visit Wulai, an aboriginal village famous for its hot springs and snacks in the mountains near Taipei.


January 9: Depart for U.S.; Arrive in Houston at 7:25 PM
