The College of Humanities and Social Sciences Advising Center’s mission is to help students understand the requirements and steps to take to earn a bachelor’s degree in humanities or social sciences.

Advisors provide assistance with degree planning and information about required courses. We are dedicated to providing every CHSS student with the necessary information and resources to accomplish academic success and to graduate in a timely manner.

The benefits of declaring a major are:

  • Easy self-registration; students with declared majors can register for courses online.
  • Access to an official degree plan, including transfer credits and courses left to take.
  • Personalized advising for your degree plan.

You must meet these requirements to declare a degree:

  • Satisfy Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
  • Complete 30 or more college-level hours
  • Complete MATH 1301/1310 or higher
  • Complete ENG 1301 & 1302
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.0

How do I declare a major?

Declaration of a major is a two-step process:

1. Submit an application online.

  • Click on screen capture of the 'my UHD" logo located at the in the header of this page
  • Choose “My Advising and Major” from the student e-services menu
  • Click “Apply for a Major”
  • Log in
  • Select Major
  • Submit.

2. Within 2-4 weeks, you will receive notification via your UHD Gator email account when your application is processed and your degree plan is complete. The email will also include instructions to proceed to the CHSS Advising Office.

How do I make an appointment with an advisor?

Call 713-221-8460 to make an appointment, or schedule an appointment online. Walk-in advising is available on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I am unable to register online. Why?

There are a few reasons why you may be unable to register online.

  • Holds: The parking, cashier, and financial aid offices can place account holds. Please visit the appropriate office the resolve your hold before registering.
  • Registration timeframes: Registration is open during set times, based on student status. Double-check the registration schedule to ensure it is your turn to register.
  • Academic probation: Students with a GPA below 2.0 are required to get approval from the department chair prior to registration.

How do I get a degree waiver?

Students seeking to waive any degree requirements must go to the CHSS Advising Center to meet with an advisor and petition for a degree waiver. For degree completion, students must complete at least 18 upper level hours and the final 30 hours of the degree at UHD. The Assistant or Associate Dean must approve any variation from these requirements before you register for a course at another institution.

What are the requirements for graduation?

In order to be successfully certified for graduation by CHSS, a student must:

  1. declare a major;
  2. complete the degree plan for a CHSS major;
  3. attain a UHD grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher;
  4. have a GPA of 2.0 or higher for those courses taken in his/her major;
  5. submit up-to-date transcripts from all other universities attended;
  6. take his/her final 30 semester credit hours at UHD (per UHD policy);
  7. take 18 semester credit hours at the upper level (3300 and above) at UHD.
