The University of Houston-Downtown's Department of Urban Education currently offers two Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs:

Designed to help existing teachers advance their expertise, both online programs will prepare future educators to teach in urban classrooms.

Our emphasis on urban teaching makes this graduate degree unique. In order to meet the special needs of all children in urban classrooms, students completing their MAT degree will demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  • Characteristics and needs of learners in multicultural settings
  • Effective teaching practices that enhance student achievement for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or language spoken
  • Factors related to the development of effective teaching environments in urban classrooms
  • Classroom-based research methodology to support best instructional practices
  • Enriched understanding of academic content areas of language arts, social studies, mathematics, the natural sciences, English as a second language and educational technology

Cain Graduate Scholarship - Apply NOW for Fall 2015

A unique scholarship opportunity is being offered to six MAT or MAT/Certification students currently admitted in the Master of Arts in Teaching program at UHD. This unique Cain Graduate Scholarship is a one year scholarship in the amount of $10,000. The scholarship will include Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters.
