The Masters of Arts in Teaching is designed to support existing teachers in advancing their expertise and to prepare future educators to teach in urban classrooms. The emphasis on urban teaching makes this graduate degree unique. To meet the special needs of all children in urban classrooms, students completing the MAT online degree will demonstrate competency in the following areas of knowledge:

  • Characteristics and needs of learners in multicultural settings
  • Effective teaching practices that enhance student achievement for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or language spoken
  • Factors related to the development of effective teaching environments in urban classrooms
  • Classroom-based research methodology to support best instructional practices
  • Factors related to the development of effective teaching environments in urban classrooms

Please note that the fully online delivery of our MAT programs forbids international students on an F1 visa from applying, as they can only complete one online course in a semester. The format of our degree requires students to enroll in a minimum of 6 hours on our scheduled rotation, both of which are online.

Graduate students in the Master of Teaching program recently held a presentation event where they presented their capstone projects to the university community. All students enrolled in the MAT program are required to complete a research project at the conclusion of their two-year course of studies. Students are matched with faculty who will guide them through the research process and grade their final projects. Read more.

MAT Grad Brings Elementary Students to Visit UHD

Teresa Dolan, a UHD Master of Arts in Teaching graduate, brought an excited group of fourth and fifth graders to UHD for a college visit May 14.

The group toured the campus, including the Commerce Street Building, visited the Admissions Office, and enjoyed a science demonstration from natural sciences instructor Mike Matson. The students then hopped on the light rail and ate lunch in the Houston tunnel system. Read more.
