University of Houston-Downtown is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award masters and baccalaureate degrees.
Participating School Districts
UHD is the ideal place to prepare for a successful urban teaching career. UH-Downtown is the most culturally diverse institution of higher learning in the state. Our enrollment reflects the city, giving us an edge in developing a program that works for urban schools. We are currently working with nine school districts:
As the minority populations in Texas and Houston continue to grow, so will the need for teachers who are bilingual and sensitive to cultural diversity. The local demand for teachers reflects a nationwide trend: student enrollments are increasing while the supply of qualified teachers is declining.
A teacher trained at UHD will be required to master the core courses plus the specialization courses for the certification being sought. You'll master the subject you teach and know a variety of methods and technologies to help each student.
From the beginning, you'll be learning in the field...in inner-city schools. During three semesters in these Houston public schools, faculty from UHD, working with outstanding inner-city teachers, will make sure you receive "real world" knowledge and skills.
