UGI-CSTEM is an NSF funded project that seeks to:
This is a joint program between University of Houston Downtown and University of Houston to:
- Foster collaborative scholarly and educational activities between undergraduate/graduate students;
- Help students succeed toward graduation,
- Prepare students to pursue and successfully attain a graduate degree in their field.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Demonstrate financial need as defined for undergraduate students by the U.S. Department of Education for need based financial aid (FASFA).
- College applicants must satisfy
- Minimum 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in college.
- Major in Computer Science.
- High School applicants must satisfy:
- Minimum score of 450 on SAT math and verbal exam sections
- Credit for at least pre-calculus
Stipends
Up to 10,000 per academic year, dependent on student's FAFSA determined eligible loan amount.
Requirements once awarded a scholarship, you must:
- Declare your major by the first week of the current semester in Computer Science.
- Enroll full- time in courses within your degree program with approved academic advising
- Be a member of the Scholars Academy.
Scholarship renewal is based on meeting the above requirements and achieving a minimum 3.0 GPA each semester while receiving an S-STEM scholarship.
UGI-STEM Students will be assigned a faculty mentor and will have access to the academic support services provided by the Scholars Academy (tutoring, PLTL, seminars, field-trips, etc.), access to research opportunities under the mentorship of a UGI-CSTEM faculty mentor, assistance locating and applying for local and national REUs, internships, and graduate school programs .
Application Materials
- A completed UGI-CSTEM application form
- One-page typed statement of applicant’s academic and professional goals
- Copy of official high school and/or college transcript(s)
- Copy of current SAT or other standardized exam scores (i.e. ACT) for High-School applicants
- A sealed recommendation letter from current counselor or instructor
