Minors in Mathematics and Statistics

 

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL MINORS:

  • No "D" accepted toward credit to minor.
  • At least 6 hours of upper-level coursework in the minor must be completed at the University of Houston-Downtown.

 

MINOR IN BIO-INFORMATICS ( Joint minor with Natural Science, 21 hours minimum)

Mathematical Sciences (15 hrs. minimum)

Required Courses:

  • MATH 3302 Probability and Statistics

and 6 hours required from:

  • CS/ MATH 3308 Numerical Methods
  • STAT 4306 Mathematics Models and Computer Simulation
  • CS 4328 Parallel Computing
  • CS/ MATH 4333 Theory and Applications of Neural Nets
  • CS/ MATH 4399 Directed Study in Computer Science/ Directed Study in Mathematics

and 6 hours required from:

  • MATH 3301 Differential Equations
  • MATH 4315 Mathematical Modeling
  • MATH 4304 Methods of Applied Mathematics
  • STAT 4307 Time Series

Natural Sciences (6 hrs. minimum)

Required Courses:

  • BIOL 3103/ 3303 General Genetics

and 3 hours required from:

  • BIOL 3302/ 3102
  • BIOL 4303 Human Genetics
  • BIOL 4320 Cellular Biology
  • BIOL 4330 Molecular Biology
  • CHEM 4340/ 4140 Gen Biochem I

 

MINOR IN MATHEMATICS (18 hrs. minimum)

Required Courses:

The sequence:

  • MATH 2401 Calculus I
  • MATH 2402 Calculus II

or

  • MATH 2411 Calculus I for the Natural Science
  • MATH 2412 Calculus II for the Natural Science

and

  • At least 10 hours of mathematics courses (2000-level and above), at least 6 hours of which must be upper level mathematics courses (3000-level and above), excluding MATH 3321 and 3322.

 

MINOR IN STATISTICS (18 hrs. minimum)

Required Courses:

The sequence:

  • MATH 1305 Finite Mathematics with Applications
  • MATH 1306 Fundamentals of Calculus With Applications
  • STAT 3309 Statistical Analysis for Business Applications I

or this sequence:

  • MATH 2401 Calculus I
  • MATH 2402 Calculus II
  • MATH 3302 Probability and Statistics

and 9 hours required from:

  • STAT 3310 Statistical Analysis for Business Applications II
  • STAT 4300 Statistical Quality Control
  • STAT 4303 Decision Mathematics
  • STAT 4306 Mathematics Models and Computer Simulation
  • STAT 4307 Time Series
  • STAT 4309 Design and Analysis of Experiments
  • STAT 4310 Applied Regression
  • STAT 4311 Options Research

 

FOR ALL MINORS:

  • All hours counted toward the minor must be passed with ā€œCā€ or higher.
  • At least 6 hours of upper-level course work in the minor must be completed at the University of Houston-Downtown.
