To increase the retention and graduation rates of African American male students and to develop or refine the necessary life skills needed for success post-graduation.
After conducting research, we discovered that 41% of freshmen and sophomore African American males have a GPA below 2.0. Therefore, recognizing the need, the University College and Student Affairs through a mutual partnership has created the African American Male Mentorship Program (AAMMP) and since February 2011 have worked diligently to get the program running. We are now (AAMMP) at the University of Houston-Downtown and it is our full intention to raise the priority of African American male student success to a higher standard at UHD.
