Advisee/Advisor Responsibilities

Advisee Responsibilities

Students are ultimately responsible for fulfilling all the requirements of the courses which they are enrolled. Students share responsibility for a successful experience and are expected to contribute to effective advising sessions by doing the following:

  • Participate in orientation.

  • Establish and following academic plan.

  • Gather all relevant decision-making information.

  • Clarify personal values and goals with your advisor.

  • Use university resources.

  • Read the catalogue to be familiar with polices and procedures.

  • Become knowledgeable about college programs, requirements and academic calendar deadlines.

  • Attend and participate in class

  • Schedule and keep appointments with an advisor. Come prepared for appointments by bringing appropriate materials, identifying course choices requirements of the preferred program or major, and identifying questions.

  • Get involved in campus and community events.

  • Be an active learner by participating fully in the advising experience.

  • Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or have specific concerns.

  • Accept responsibility for your own decisions.

Advisor Responsibilities
  • Know your students.

  • Communicate university polices and procedures

  • Be familiar with program requirements.

  • Make recommendations for registration and academic plan.

  • Help students define and develop realistic goals.

  • Match students' needs with available resources and make appropriate referrals.

  • Motivate students to take responsibility for their own academic and career goals.

  • Exhibit trust and confidence in students.
