Mathematics & Statistics Minors

MINOR PROGRAMS 

For minors in mathematics and statistics:

 

  • All hours counted toward the minor must be passed with a “C” or better. 
  • At least 6 hours of upper-level coursework in the minor must be completed at the University of Houston-Downtown.

 

MINOR IN DATA SCIENCE (21/ 22 hours minimum)

  • All hours counted toward the minor must be passed with a “C” or better.
  • At least 6 hours of upper-level coursework in the minor must be completed at the University of Houston-Downtown.
Required Courses:
  • CS 1311 - Introduction to computing with Python
  • DATA 2401 - Data Science I
  • DATA 3401 - Data Science II
  • MATH 2305 - Discrete Mathematical Structures
  • MATH 2421 - Differential and Integral Calculus with Applications or MATH 2402 - Calculus II  or MATH 2412 - Calculus II for the Natural Sciences.  

Choose one course from the following:

  • Any additional DATA course (examples: DATA 3334, DATA 3402, DATA 4319)
  • MATH 3302 - Probability and Statistics
  • MATH 3423 - Advanced Linear Algebra and Optimization
  • STAT 3311 - Statistical Analysis for Natural Science
  • STAT 3333 - Statistical Inference

 

MINOR IN ACTUARIAL MATHEMATICS (18 hours minimum)

Required Courses:
6 hours of lower level MATH and ECON from the following: 

ECO 2301 - Principles of Economics I 
MATH 1305 - Finite Mathematics with Applications or 
MATH 1306 - Fundamentals of Calculus with Applications or 
MATH 2401 - Calculus I or MATH 2411 - Calculus I for the Natural Sciences 
 
12 hours of the upper level in MATH and STAT from the following: 
MATH 3317 - Actuarial Mathematics I 
MATH 3318 - Actuarial Mathematics II 
MATH 4316 - Decision Mathematics (or STAT 4303 - Decision Mathematics) 
MATH 3302 - Probability and Statistics or
STAT 3309 - Statistical Analysis for Business Applications I or
STAT 3311 - Statistical Analysis for Natural Science

MINOR IN MATHEMATICS (18 hours minimum)

Math 2401-2402 or Math 2411-2412, plus at least 10 hours of mathematics courses (2000-level and above), at least 6 hours of which must be upper-level mathematics courses (3000-level and above), excluding MATH 3321 and 3322.

MINOR IN STATISTICS (18 hours minimum)

Required Courses:
One of the following sequences:
MATH 1305, MATH 1306, STAT 3309 or
MATH 2401,  MATH 2402, MATH 3302

STAT 3310 or STAT 3311
At least 6 hours of 4000-level statistics courses.

FOR ALL MINORS:

All hours counted toward the minor must be passed with “C” or better. At least 6 hours of upper-level course work in the minor must be completed at the University of Houston-Downtown.
