Job Summary

The Assistant Director, Advising Services directs and coordinates the academic advising activities of a college of academic unit.

Duties

  • Oversees the operations and activities of an advising center.
  • Provides academic career guidance for students, advising students on degree plan completion, referring students to other resources as needed, and coaching students to help them identify and accomplish their goals, leading to degree completion.
  • Performs high level administrative duties, including, but not limited to, approving, denying, preparing, and submitting petitions, responding to emails and processing graduation applications.
  • Recruits and trains advisors, maintaining training checklists and manuals.
  • Coordinates as necessary to resolve student issues.
  • Maintains, updates, and audits student records, updating graduation applications, submitting late graduation applications on behalf of students, and inputting course permissions and enrollment limit overrides.
  • Maintains records of student populations.
  • Serves on university committees as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the advising function in a higher education environment, and the related trends, issues, and best practices.

Skills:

  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office, EAB Navigate, and PeopleSoft; strong analytical and problem solving skills; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community.

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in an office environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Work is performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements; individual has discretion in relation to walking, standing etc., and has minimal exposure to physical risks. Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Must have the ability to move items of up to 35lbs.
