Dear UHD Faculty and Staff:
A new academic year is always an exhilarating time - new faces, new opportunities, fresh starts. I'm looking forward to providing our students with Major Opportunities this year and I'm pleased that we are working to lend a hand to new and returning students and helping them accomplish their goal of a college degree.
Let me welcome all of you to the fall 2012 semester. I extend a special welcome to new faculty and staff who have joined us since the close of the spring semester. These newcomers will be introduced at our fall convocation, scheduled for Wednesday, September 26 at 2:30 p.m. More information about this event will be forthcoming. This also will be an opportunity to receive further updates on the University and to learn more about our strategic plan, completed under the direction of Provost Brian Chapman.
You'll notice continued construction and improvements around our campus. It has been one year since North Main was closed from Commerce to Naylor to accommodate METRO's expansion of the northbound rail line. Construction crews have worked steadily over this past year and are on schedule to complete most of their work in the UHD area by January 2013. Construction is already beginning to ease, with some traffic lanes re-opening and the pedestrian underpass between One Main and the Shea Street Building scheduled to open Monday, August 27. You can get further updates on construction around campus at http://www.uhd.edu/construction/
Within the One Main Building, the Mentoring Center on the 9th floor is completed and will be fully operational in early fall 2012 under the leadership of Dr. Robert Jarrett, Dean of Advising and Mentoring. In the meantime, work on the new Advising Center has begun. This project will require several relocations and the new Center is expected to open in 2013. Further updates and improvements in the W.I. Dykes Library have been - or soon will be - completed, including new furnishings on the 5th floor, an updated Rockwell Room, and a soon-to-be named coffee house scheduled to open later this fall. Our next major project will be the new Parking Garage. Information on this project has been provided and there will be updates in the fall and spring as the project start date - Summer 2013 - nears.
To date, our enrollment numbers look very positive. However, we won't claim success until after the 12th day of classes. I encourage all faculty and staff to work with students to ensure their successful transition into the first days of classes to keep enrollment numbers high. This is a base year, with the Texas Legislature convening in spring 2013. Strong enrollment numbers are very important for our financial health and well-being. Most importantly, we must work hard to help students succeed, ensuring increased retention and graduation rates.
Lastly, I encourage you to participate in Welcome Week. It's an opportunity to experience the enthusiasm of new and returning students and to welcome them to UHD. It takes all of us working together to create a good experience for our students, and your efforts make a difference.
UHD has given each of us a Major Opportunity - we can make a difference in students' lives and ensure that they have all of the opportunities that education provides. I thank all of you for helping our students achieve their dreams.
