Admission Procedures- Intensive English Program

International Studentsstudents

Admission to the University of Houston-Downtown English Language Institute is open to most non-native speakers who have completed their higher/secondary school education. We seldom accept minors. Students below 18 years of age must contact us first. To apply to the English Language Institute (ELI), please send the following items:
  • Completed and signed International Student Admissions Application,
  • An Affidavit of Support form (completed and signed by the financial sponsor).
  • Original letter from sponsor's bank indicating the sponsor's ability to pay for student expenses.
  • Admission fee of $60.00 ($100.00 late application fee) paid by credit card, cashier's check, money order, and personal check. Personal checks must be in U.S. dollars and imprinted with the account holder's name and address.
  • Copy of your high school diploma.
  • Copy of passport pages; pages must display the student's identification information and passport expiration date.

Note: Your Affidavit of Support form, bank letter and high school diploma must be sent by mail to the English Language Institute.


Notarized Form of Guardianship

Students who are not 18 years old must submit a notarized Guardianship Form. This form names a guardian:

  • Who lives in the U.S.
  • Is over the age of 18
  • Has permission to make emergency decisions for the student


Note: Students who have applied for residency but have not had their interview and who do not have a passport stamp for temporary resident admission to the United States are treated as international students in terms of tuition. For more information, please visit our Apply to UHD webpage.


U.S. Residents and Citizens

Residents and citizens can register for English Language Institute classes with the following:

  • Proof of high school graduation
  • Residency card or proof of citizenship (green card)
  • $40 non-refundable application fee 


Intensive English Program Admission Procedures

All trainees are eligible for business English classes if they are 18 years of age or older. Classes tailored to a specific company’s needs or to a specific trainee require approval by the Business English Coordinator before admission is granted.
