Buses and the Train (Light Rail)metro rail

Public transportation is available in Houston through the Metropolitan Transit Authority.  Buses serve 66% of Harris County including Houston and the NASA/Clear Lake area.  The Light Rail train, which stops at the front door of the Unviersity of Houston-Downtown, costs the same amount as a bus and accepts the same tickets, passes and transfers as buses. Students who purchase a "Q card" get a discount. Students can obtain maps and schedules either at at the UHD's Cashier's office or at the METRO web site.  Taxi service is available but is somewhat expensive.

Because Houston encompasses a large area, many people drive. State law requires that automobile owners purchase adequate automobile insurance policies. All drivers must obtain a driver's license, which requires passing both a written and a driving test. Many ELI students purchase and drive cars, but most students use the bus or Light Rail System for transportation needs.
