Public transportation is available in Houston through the Metropolitan Transit Authority.  Buses serve 66 percent of Harris Counting, including Houston and the NASA/Clear Lake area.

Light Rail Train

The Light Rail train, which stops at the front door of the University of Houston-Downtown, accepts the same tickets, passes, and transfers as METRO buses. Students who purchase a METRO Q Fare Card will receive a discount.

Students can obtain maps and schedules either at UHD's Cashier's Office or at the METRO website.

Because Houston encompasses a large area, many people drive. State law requires that automobile owners purchase adequate automobile insurance policies. All drivers must obtain a driver's license, which requires passing both a written and a driving test. Many ELI students purchase and drive cars, but most students use the bus or Light Rail System for transportation needs.

Note: Taxi service is available to students, but is somewhat expensive.
