Alumnus' Advice: Get Involved

Ali Abedi Ali Abedi's desire to impact the world and serve others has distinguished him at the University of Houston-Downtown. The successful student's advice to UHD students: get involved; the rewards are great.

The Iranian-Indian student has worked with more organizations than one might think possible including the National Wildlife Federation, UHD Environmental Club, Mathematic Association of America, Leeuwenhoek Society and UHD Photography Club. He also served as the UHD Student Government Association president for the 2010-2011 academic year, tutored math and was a peer mentor for UHD's Scholars Academy members.

"These experiences were invaluable and I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve my peers in various ways," Abedi said.

"One of the greatest challenges I've overcome during college is learning how to successfully manage my time between my studies, extra-curricular responsibilities, family and trying to get more than three hours of sleep a night."

"But I will take with me a sense of mindfulness for others and the knowledge that every person has a different, equally valuable perspective in life," Abedi said.
