For Andy Ryle, two associate's degrees and four years in the United States Air Force wasn't challenging enough, he now studies biotechnology at the University of Houston-Downtown.
"I went into the Air Force because I didn't know what I wanted to do with my future," Ryle said. "But when I got out, I knew I needed more education and I chose UHD."
He already holds associate degrees in management from the University of Maryland and aviation electronics from the Community College of the Air Force, but The Woodlands native said UHD was perfect for him because it offered a bachelor's degree in biotechnology and small class sizes.
"I'm really interested in biology and how the body functions," Ryle said. "This program looked really hard and I like a challenge, so it was a good fit."
After graduating UHD in 2012, Ryle wants to channel his education and experience into pharmacology research, studying cancer or Crohn's disease.
Outside of the classroom, Ryle swims for a club team in The Woodlands, is looking for an internship in his field and hopes to get more involved at UHD. He also loves to travel, having spent several months stationed in Italy, Kuwait, Korea and Turkey.
