Success Stories: Bob Morrissey

Bob Morrissey

Recent UHD graduate Bob Morrissey has seen and done it all: from starting his undergraduate education in New York City to living in New Orleans, and from an Army deployment to Iraq in Field Artillery to a job as a cab driver in Houston. These diverse experiences have given Morrissey a knack for communicating with others, which led to his passion and ultimate dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Morrissey reflected on education as another possible career path, adding "humor is something teaching lacks these days."

Morrissey graduated in May 2013 with a bachelor's degree in history. He originally chose UHD because of its affordability and proximity to his home, but decided to stay because of the small class sizes, personable and qualified professors, and a great view of the Houston skyline. He appreciated the University's location because he often rode his bicycle to campus (weather permitting) and enjoyed some of the finer things in downtown Houston after class. He also noted that a major opportunity for him at UHD was being able to earn his degree while working a full-time job.

Today, Morrissey is living his dream by performing at comedy clubs in Houston and New Orleans - he even appeared at the Houston Comedy Festival in May.

Morrissey is the epitome of a never-give-up attitude. It took him several years and a great deal of effort to finish his degree, but claims it is an "almost unreal" feeling to have walked the stage in May. He offered this advice to students considering UHD, "The effort you put in is the primary factor in the results you will get out of your education."

Whether he is performing his comedy routine in front of an audience in New Orleans or engaging future students with laughter, this alumnus believes UHD provided the opportunity and tools he needed to follow his dreams.
