Hashtags

Hashtags are used to group posts that are related to a common topic. They can be tapped or clicked to see other posts that are about the same topic.

Hashtags don’t hold the same value that they once did, but they’re still relevant. They were originally a way for people to easily search for the content they were interested in and for algorithms to easily understand what a post was about and how to group it with other relevant posts. Now that the algorithms have become more advanced, hashtags usually aren’t necessary. We recommend adding relevant keywords to your caption to ensure searchability.

Many brands have a set of hashtags they use and encourage others to use on social media. The University of Houston-Downtown uses #UHD and #UniversityofHoustonDowntown as its official, general-use hashtags.

Other hashtags exist for more specific use cases, such as #UHD50 for UHD’s 50th Anniversary, #UHDalumni for posts related to UHD alums and #UHDgators for students, faculty or staff posts. Be mindful of the hashtags you are using to ensure that your post is not associated with content that you did not intend. As a best practice, research hashtags to determine whether the hashtag is relevant or valuable to your post.

Capitalize the first letter of each word in hashtags that contain multiple words so that your content remains the most accessible (ex. #GatorEvolution). When using “UHD” within a hashtag, keep the first letter of a second word lowercase (ex. #UHDalumni).
