In honor of National Transfer Student Week (October 21-25), UHD is proud to highlight the achievements and contributions of our transfer student population. This year, we shine the spotlight on Diana Cantu, a Criminal Justice major and a shining example of the dedication and drive that transfer students bring to our campus.
Cantu, who transferred to UHD from Lone Star College at University Park, is a first-generation student and a Transfer Merit Scholar. She is making the most of her time as a Gator, actively engaging in campus life while pursuing her degree with an anticipated graduation in Spring 2025.
"When I first visited UHD, I knew it had something bigger to offer me," Cantu shared. "The environment wasn’t overwhelming, everyone was friendly, and I could sense the strong community within UHD."
This sense of community has fostered Cantu's involvement in various extracurricular activities. She serves as the Secretary for the Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma, frequents the UHD Wellness and Success Center, and volunteers at key events for incoming UHD students like Destination Downtown and Transfer Thursdays.
Cantu's commitment to her education and her future is evident. She aspires to a career with the Houston Police Department, with the ultimate goal of becoming a detective in the Special Victim's Unit.
"Professor Karina Rodriguez has had a huge impact on me," Cantu explained. "Her passion for teaching and sharing her experiences in the Child Abuse and Neglect course was inspiring. I aspire to be as passionate about my career as she is."
When asked about a fond memory at UHD, Cantu recalled the excitement and energy of Weeks of Welcome. "I love seeing everyone interact with each other. You can see and feel the excitement in the air and in the hallways."
Cantu's advice to fellow transfer students is simple: "Take advantage of all your resources, speak up when you have questions, and learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable."
UHD is proud to celebrate Diana Cantu and all our transfer students during National Transfer Student Week. Their unique perspectives and experiences enrich our campus community and contribute to the vibrant Gator spirit.
