Ed Gonzalez, a proud alumnus of the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD), has built a distinguished career in public service and law enforcement in the Houston area. Born and raised in Houston, Gonzalez earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from UHD, which laid the foundation for his future achievements in public safety.
Gonzalez began his law enforcement career with the Houston Police Department (HPD), serving for 18 years. During his tenure, he held various roles, gaining extensive experience in community policing and criminal investigations. His dedication to fostering trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the community defined his work.
In 2009, Gonzalez was elected to the Houston City Council to represent District H, serving three terms until 2016. During his time on the council, he was appointed Vice Mayor Pro-Tem from 2010 to 2012. Gonzalez focused on public safety initiatives, neighborhood improvements, and providing strong constituent services to his district.
On January 1, 2017, Gonzalez was sworn in as the 30th Sheriff of Harris County, Texas, leading the largest sheriff's office in the state and the third largest in the nation. Under his leadership, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office has made significant strides in criminal justice reform, community engagement, and improving jail conditions, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to bettering the community.
In October 2024, Gonzalez was honored with the prestigious Golden Gator Award at UHD’s 50th Anniversary Gala. This recognition highlighted his enduring connection to his alma mater and his commitment to the values and spirit of the UHD community.
