Welcome Message from the Dean of the College of Public Service
On behalf of the College of Public Service (CPS), congratulations on your admission to UHD.
As your college dean, I am thrilled to welcome you to the Gator Family. We strive
to engage in dynamic research to improve the quality of our area schools, justice
institutions, and social service agencies - to instill scholarship, integrity and
responsibility in tomorrow's leaders. The College believes that an educated society
creates thoughtful policy and humanistic practices for the betterment of the communities
we serve.
At UHD, you will make an impact while earning your degree with real world and service
learning experiences in Houston and beyond:
Just steps from campus, pursue an internship with Houston District Attorney's Office, Harris County Sheriff's Office, Houston Police Department, and many others to learn about the criminal justice system.
In Social Work, students will have the opportunity to tackle real issues by working with homeless, domestic violence victims, immigration issues, and more.
Education students will learn to take advantage of close partnerships with the major school districts to have high impact student teaching. Students benefit from UHD's participation in a grant that brings innovative research based approaches to training teachers.
Be eligible for CPS college specific scholarship opportunities.
Explore the world with study abroad opportunities in countries such as India, Costa Rica and England to gain insight on global social justice issues.
Participate in research and action labs on topics that include Social and Community Justice, Equity, Financial Literacy and Economical Stability, Criminal Justice, and Gerontology.
CPS prides itself on community engagement; all of our majors frequently collaborate with public service professionals receiving practical hands-on learning opportunities in the greater Houston area. You will have the chance to conduct important research alongside your professors to improve the quality of our schools, justice institutions, and greater communities.
As you take the necessary next steps transition to UHD, I encourage you to sign up for New Student Orientation early! The program will provide you with an overview of the University and put you on the path to finalize your enrollment steps.
