Student Support Resources

Below is a list of a few academic support services available to all enrolled students. For a list of additional services, support, and relevant student policies, please view the Campus Resource and Information Guide.

Academic Computing Labs (S800, C300, B200):

Visit these labs for access to PC’s and the Internet. Also laptop checkout, scanners, and printers are available in these locations. See www.uhd.edu/computing/  for more information and schedules.

 

Career Development Center (S402):

Whether you are choosing a major, searching for that perfect job or preparing for graduate school, the Career Development Center is here to offer the coaching and guidance you need. Center for Community Engagement & Service Learning, The (S417):

The purpose of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) is to prepare educated, engaged students; to strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; to address critical societal issues; and to build partnerships of knowledge and resources with the public and private sectors to enrich and enhance curriculum, teaching, and learning, thus providing students with high impact practices that enhance their academic careers at UHD. Center of Advocacy and Belonging (S370):

The Center for Diversity & Inclusion serves the UHD community by leading efforts to support and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion on our campus and to leverage the rich diversity of our campus community to the benefit of our students. We offer workshops and programming in support of diversity and inclusion initiatives, provides resources and expertise for students and faculty interested in addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion in their academic work, and offers advising, mentoring, and advocacy to diversity-oriented student organizations, as well as to individual students. Collaborative Learning Community Center (S735):

The aim of the CLCC is to tutor and mentor all Mathematics, Computer Science, Science, and Engineering scholarship recipients, Mathematics majors, and/or Computer Science majors who are enrolled in Mathematics and Computer Science courses. College of Business Tutoring Center (B212 & B214):  

The College of Business Tutoring Center is a program designed to provide all College of Business students with the academic assistance they need to complete their courses. The service is offered free of charge to all College of Business students. The Tutoring Center is staffed with Instructors and highly qualified peer tutors who have successfully completed the courses they are tutoring. The tutors are available to students who many need additional help with their classes. The Tutoring Center offers a drop-in program, where appointments are not needed.  You may call us at 713-221-8661.

 

Foreign Language Lab, The (N950):    

The Foreign Language Lab provides the necessary technology and space for students studying French and Spanish. All beginner Spanish courses meet at the lab at least once a week as part of their class in order to practice the language using interactive online activities. The Lab provides tutoring for French and writing-intensive Spanish classes. In addition, on-site tutors are available (Monday –Thursday) for students in SPAN 1401, 1402, 2301, and 2302. Students can also use the lab to write Spanish papers and other homework. 

 

Learning Connection (S405):     

The Learning Connection offers regular, informal study sessions led by trained student tutors (called Supplemental Instruction Leaders) where small groups of students review notes, discuss readings and homework, and prepare for tests. Library (S500, N400):     

Need help? Ask a librarian! There are several help options to contact a librarian on the library’s homepage www.uhd.edu/library. Look for the help options on the right hand side. You can always call the Information Desk at 713-221-8187 during library hours. A librarian is at the desk whenever the library is open.

 

Library Self-Help Online Tutoring Resources:    

UHD online self-paced tutoring resources for writing, science, and math, which includes e-books, videos, websites, and contact information to campus resources. library.uhd.edu/infolitinstruction

Math & Stats Center (N925): 

The Math Center is staffed with mathematics faculty and student assistants, and offers tutoring, calculators, computer access, and other types of aides on a walk-in basis. Visit the Math Center throughout the semester, no appointment required. It is also an excellent place to work on homework problems, so that you can receive immediate help as necessary.

 

Office of Disability Services (GSB 314):

Disability Services at the University of Houston-Downtown is committed to student success. In alignment with the University’s overall efforts, the Office of Disability Services strives to empower students, foster independence, and improve academic achievement and career development. Tutoring support and computer lab for students enrolled in SOS 3312.

 

Science Learning Center (N604):    

The Science Learning Center at the University of Houston-Downtown, located in Room N-604, is a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility dedicated to the support of science learning and teaching at many levels. Sports and Fitness (Student Life Center):    

Sports & Fitness provides members with programs and facilities that offer vigorous, fun-filled, health-promoting, physical activity conducive to wellness and personal development. Through a well-equipped recreational facility, fitness programs, intramural sports and club sports, members will be motivated to embrace a healthy life-style, which may ultimately enhance their quality of life. www.uhd.edu/sportsandfitness

 

Student Counseling Services (S445):    

The Student Counseling Program is designed to help you maximize your health and effectiveness at home, school or work. Through this program, you receive confidential, personal support for a wide range of issues, from everyday concerns to serious problems. You may call us at 713-500-3852.  www.uhd.edu/counseling

Student Health Services (S445):  

 
Student Health Services focuses on health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. Clinicians provide the same primary care found in most physicians’ offices (including women’s health) and offer referrals to specialists in the community when necessary. Routine laboratory services, pregnancy testing, and confidential HIV testing are provided. The nurse provides health counseling on a wide variety of health issues and offers select services throughout the year. Appointments are recommended for these services. In addition, Student Health Insurance information is available on-line. www.uhd.edu/health

Student Organizations (S204):    

With over 50 student organizations, the Office of Student Activities & Events works diligently to serve diverse needs of our students. From honor societies and Greek organizations, to cultural and social groups it is easy to get involved on campus. Contact a member of our staff if there is not an organization that fits your needs and we will be happy to help you get it started!

 

Veterans Services (GSB 318):    

UHD Veterans Services assists veterans, reservists, guardsmen, and dependents of disabled or deceased veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over 500 veterans are currently pursuing a degree at UHD. Veterans Services ensures that proper paperwork is completed, certified, and filed with the Department of Veterans Affairs so that payment of education benefits can begin. Writing and Reading Center (N925):
