Join Jasminne Mendez, award-winning Dominican-American author and poet, for an inspiring reading from her works, including her YA memoir, Islands Apart: Becoming Dominican American, and her debut poetry collection, City Without Altar (2022). Mendez’s powerful writing explores themes of identity, belonging, and the immigrant experience, offering an honest and heartfelt look into the challenges and triumphs of being Dominican American.
In addition to her memoir and poetry, Mendez has made her mark as a translator, bringing Amanda Gorman’s Change Sings to Spanish readers with her translation La canción del cambio. The dramatized version of her play in verse, City Without Altar, had its world premiere at Milagro Theatre in Portland, Oregon, showcasing her ability to blend poetry and performance in groundbreaking ways.
A graduate of Pacific Lutheran University’s MFA program and a Canto Mundo Fellow, Mendez is an important voice in both the literary and Latino communities, and this reading offers a chance to engage directly with an artist whose work is shaping the future of American literature.
