Logging In / Access

Do I need to be connected via VPN to access a Power BI Dashboard?

VPN connection is not required, but some dashboards will require for you to be logged in with your UHD network account.

What browsers does Power BI work best with?

The latest versions of the following browsers:

Microsoft Edge
Chrome
Safari
Firefox

Does it work on a tablet, smartphone?

Yes, you can download the Power BI App for Android, iOS, or a Windows device and log in to view your dashboards and reports.

Do I need to download anything on my computer/device?

No, to view the dashboard you do not need to download anything.

My colleague also needs access, how do we request access?

Please ask that your colleague emails dair@uhd.edu to sign up to attend a demonstration so they can be granted access to the dashboards maintained by DAIR.

I have logged in but the login screen is popping up again, what should I do?

This is a known issue that Microsoft will have to resolve. For now, please click the 'refresh' button on the browser to view the dashboard.

Power BI Functions

How often is the data refreshed?

In general, each dashboard is refreshed once per day. If an update schedule is different, it will be listed within that specific dashboard.

How do I zoom in on the map visual?

Click on the visual of the map and either use the +/- buttons on the keyboard or the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out.

How do I select more than one value in a filter?

Hold down the Ctrl key (Windows) or Command key (Apple) and make your selections.

How do I make a graphic larger?

In the top right-hand corner of many of the individual graphics is an icon called "Focus Mode" (bring your mouse to the top right-hand corner to make it appear). Clicking on "Focus Mode" allows you to see the graphic on its own, and slightly larger. To return to the dashboard, click "Back to report".

Can I export the data behind a graphic?

Yes, you can export the summarized data for selected dashboards. Bring your mouse to the top right-hand corner to make the icons appear, if one appears that looks like three dots (and says "More Options"), click on it and you will have the option to export the summarized data.

How do I view the exported data in Excel?

Open the Excel file, if data is not visible, click the "Enable Editing" button (in yellow bar) and then click the "Enable Content" button (in yellow bar) and the data table should appear.

Are there additional resources or tools to learn about Power BI?

Yes, Microsoft has published a large repository of documentation about Power BI and its many functions. A general overview Power BI and video series which is broken down into short 5 - 10 minute sections are available.
