Library Fines and Charges

At this time, only the current University of Houston-Downtown students, faculty, staff, and alumni may visit the W.I. Dykes Library to borrow materials. Students, faculty, and staff from other University of Houston System campuses may borrow materials under the same borrowing privileges as their UHD counterpart by way of intercampus delivery. Other borrowers affiliated with UHD can borrow library materials on a limited basis. To view items that you checked out or want to renew, please see the My Library Account webpage.

The library assesses fines and other fees for overdue, damaged, and lost materials. Fines and fees of $10.00 or more will result in the loss of borrowing privileges and prevent you from requesting transcripts.

Overdue, Damaged, and Lost Items

Overdue items
Return or renew items on or before the due date to avoid any fines or fees. If items have pending requests or recalls, it is not eligible for renewal. When items are significantly overdue, the library will consider them lost, and charge borrowers with a replacement fee along with a processing fee for each item.

Damaged Items
Borrowers must return items in the same condition as when checked out. If they return items with what the library deems irreparable damage or liquid damage, it will charge them with a replacement fee along with a processing fee for each item.

Lost or Stolen Items
Please report lost or stolen items to the library immediately.  Borrowers are financially responsible for items lost while checked out to their accounts. The library will handle stolen items on a case-by-case basis and determine whether to charge borrowers with a replacement fee along with a processing fee for each item.

Payment

  1. Notify the library of your intention to pay any replacement fines or charges so it can arrange with the Cashier's Office to accept payment.
  • Visit the Cashier's Office at Suite 310 in the main building.
  • Pay the appropriate fine or charge.
  • Obtain your receipt or confirm proof of payment through your PeopleSoft account.
  • Contact the Cashier's Office for any questions.

  • Refunds

If borrowers pay for any items that are found afterward and return them within 90 days of payment, the Cashier's Office will issue a refund. It will issue refunds in the original form of payment and will usually process them in 7-10 business days.
