Faculty Development Awards

Faculty Development Award Program

The FDA program provides small project awards to support and enhance the University's educational mission and enrich its faculty. Awards can be given for any proposed activity that supports a faculty member’s professional development in the areas of teaching, scholarship, service, and leadership.  Faculty submit applications to the Faculty Development Award program each fall semester. For details on the program, please refer to PS 10.A.24 University Faculty Development Award Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use FDA for conference travel?
A: Yes. Often faculty who need additional funds, outside of any departmental funds, apply to FDA.

Q: Can I use FDA to present my research at a conference or does it have to be strictly about teaching?
A: You can use FDA to attend and present at a research-related conference.

Q: Can I use FDA to attend a workshop or participate in a training?
A: Yes. Faculty are encouraged to apply to FDA to support their own professional development in any of the areas of teaching, scholarship, service, and leadership.

Q: Can I use FDA to pay for course releases?
A: No, FDA cannot be used for course releases?

Q: Can I use FDA to fund research-related activities?
A: This depends. You can use FDA for conference travel to present your work. However, FDA should not be used for the purposes of conducting research (e.g. paying for transcription services, paying students, purchasing software for research purposes, only). These activities are better suited for ORCA.

Q: What if I need to make changes to my initial budget?
A: You will not be able to receive additional funds from FDA; however, you can make changes to the amount per proposed item. For example, if the flight turned out to be more expensive, you could move funding from lodging to cover airfare.

Q: What if my conference was canceled or I was not accepted? Can I make changes to the proposed activities?
A: You will need to obtain approval from Judith Quander, AVP Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, quanderr@uhd.edu, before moving forward. As long as the new activity is similar in nature to the initial activity, it will more than likely be approved.

Q: How soon will I be able to access the FDA funds?
A: Typically, FDA funds will be available in the January following the approved application.

Q: How long do I have to use the money?
A: You have three long semesters, starting with the spring semester immediately after the application has been approved.
