It's Hurricane Season: Be Prepared!
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service forecasters predict above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. NOAA's outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season with a range of four to seven major hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or higher). Forecasters have a 70% confidence in these ranges.

Great news! The UHD food court is open again, as is the campus Starbucks. Also, GatorCash is now accepted at all UHD snack and food vending machines, as well as the Coca-Cola vending machines.
City Council District H's Paid Horizons Internship Program
The District H Horizons Internship Program, led by City Council Member Mario Castillo, is an opportunity designed to cultivate the next generation of public leaders. It offers hands-on experience in local government and community service organizations, focusing on empowering students from diverse backgrounds, especially those with experience in the LGBTQ+ and minority communities.
CFO University Returns to UHD
Hosted by UHD, the one-day conference from 8:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 6, 2024, includes dynamic sessions ranging from topics like, "Navigating the High Stakes in IT" and "Be the House: Decision Making in a High Stakes World". Located at UHD One Main Building (OMB), the annual event provides training curriculum for aspiring financial executives and chief financial officers. Attendees can expect more than ten esteemed speakers, panel-style discussions, and a variety of networking opportunities.
UHD and Houston Rockets Collaborate To Host Basketball Camp
The camp, a collaboration between UHD and the Houston Rockets, gives your 10-to-16-year-old son or daughter the opportunity to learn from trained experts and develop life-long skills in teamwork, discipline and leadership. Held from June 10 through 14, campers will have access to UHD's state-of-the-art Wellness and Success Center (WSC) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The WSC was honored with the 2024 Outstanding Facilities Award, one of only six universities to receive the distinction.

Organic Chemistry Students Taught by Dr. Vishakha Shembekar Present Findings
Recently, a group of Gators presented their findings just that subject to a group of local high school students, all of whom were shocked by the effects, yes, but also excited about the underlying chemistry the UHD students had employed to research them. The presenters were all taking part in a Service-Learning project as part of an Organic Chemistry course taught by Dr. Vishakha Shembekar, a Lecturer in the Natural Sciences Department in the College of Sciences & Technology.
Jesus Kargue Goes the Extra Mile
Jesus Kargue, a coordinator in the Marilyn Davies College of Business' Administrative Services department, was recognized with the Goes the Extra Mile Award during last year's Staff Awards Ceremony. He's one of five staff members recognized for commitment to the university.
Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, University of Houston-Downtown welcomed Mr. David Ono to discuss Japanese Americans in World War II and the valiant Nisei Soldiers, second-generation Japanese Americans who fought in segregated units.
